Design Of Lexus IS 350 F-Sport

The Lexus IS 350 F-Sport manages to be what the Lexus IS F isn’t -- attractive. The Lexus IS 350 F-Sport’s lowered stance, dished wheels and rolled exhaust tips add just the right amount of menace to the already-handsome standard Lexus IS sedan. But outside of the bright blue brake calipers or polished exhaust tips, the Lexus IS 350 F-Sport’s image is pretty understated. Inside the Lexus IS 350 F-Sport, well, nothing has changed. It’s the same interior that is found in any Lexus IS 350 . Driving position is good, though the low roof makes things seem a bit cramped for taller drivers. The backseat isn’t all that usable, but since we’re not in the business of carting our friends or colleagues around, the tight backseat really isn’t a concern for us. Our test car also came with Lexus’ excellent touchscreen nav/command system, complete with rearview camera. All in all, the cockpit was what you’d expect from a Lexus, but we’d like to see at least an F-Sport performance seat upgrade offered in the near future.

The latest car to benefit from this line of Lexus IS F-Sport products is the Lexus IS 350, and we got the chance to take a fully loaded F-Sport Lexus IS 350 for a spin.All the upgrades are pricey, but not all of them effective. For our money, we’d add just the suspension and brake upgrades and save a few grand by ignoring the engine stuff -- but that’s just us.

After four years with only one body style, the Lexus IS returned with a second body style, this time in convertible form. On 2 October 2008, Lexus debuted a hardtop convertible version of the Lexus IS, the Lexus IS 250 C, at the Paris Mondial de l'Automobile 2008 (Paris Auto Show). A more powerful IS 350 C version was also reported, with engine specifications analogous to those on the sedan models. The Lexus IS convertible features a three-piece aluminum hardtop that can retract in 21 seconds, a roof-brake mechanism slows panels as they close and near the windshield. The Lexus IS 250 C and Lexus IS 350 C will be offered with a six-speed automatic, while the Lexus IS 250 C will also offer a manual transmission. The Lexus IS convertible's body carries a 0.29 Cd figure. The Lexus IS 250 C is scheduled to go on sale in Europe in 2009, with Lexus IS convertible sales for North America targeted for May 2009 as a 2010 model. An Lexus IS 300 C is also being produced for certain regions.
Lexus IS F

On 6 December 2006, Lexus officially confirmed the existence of a high-performance variant of the second generation Lexus IS which they called Lexus IS F in a press release. The Lexus IS F sedan premiered at the 2007 North American International Auto Show on January 8, 2007 as the launch product of Lexus' F marque lineup of performance-focused vehicles. The vehicle features a 5.0 L direct-injected V8 producing 416 SAE hp (423 PS, 311 kW) at 6,600 rpm, while peak torque is 371 ft·lbf (503 N·m) at 5,200 rpm. The engine also features a two-stage intake system, engine oil and transmission fluid coolers and an oil pump designed for high-speed cornering. Images were leaked a couple of hours before the official announcement.
The specifications upon release are as follows: starting price is $56,000 USD, 5.0L V8 engine, 416 hp (310 kW) at 6,600 rpm, 371 ft·lbf (503 N·m) torque at 5,200 rpm, 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 4.3 seconds and a 12.385 seconds at 115.010 mph (185.1 km/h) in the 1/4mile, and a top speed of 170 mph (270 km/h) (electronically limited). According to a test by Motor Trend, the IS F recorded a 331 hp (247 kW; 336 PS) and 276 pound-feet (374 N·m) of torque on a DynoJet dynamometer. Typical dyno results with 93 octane are 357+hp and 345+tq.

History of Lexus IS 350 Coupe

The concept car that is most likely to influence the design of the new Lexus IS Coupe is the 2004 LF-C. Although this vehicle is a retractable hardtop cabriolet, certain features such as the front lights and front spoiler influenced the design of the current Lexus IS sedans.
The styling of the concept vehicle was produced by the Calty Design Research Center, featuring a unique hardtop design that allows the car to transform itself at the touch of a button from a coupe to a convertible, to a targa or to a speedster, depending on the driver’s mood. The powered top diagonally stowed neatly into the trunk through an amazingly negligible rear-deck opening.
The vehicle’s large rear wheel drive platform utilized a high-output, front-mounted V8 engine, mated with a six-speed sequential automatic transmission. With a wheelbase expanded with 5 inches, the Lexus LF-C was only slightly longer overall than the current Lexus IS. Appreciably, the Lexus LF-C sat about 2 inches lower and was 5 inches wider than the current Lexus IS. The wide stance and small overhangs stroke an aggressive pose with generous dimensions that accommodated four adult passengers.
"We used a combination of convex and concave surfaces to control the balance of light and shadow on the car which creates this beautiful contrast of having sharp lines within the sculpted exterior surfaces," said Kevin Hunter, vice president of Calty Design Research, Inc. "The idea was to create a sense of strength and softness at the same time, adding an air of mystery." Calty used long, integrated lines to simplify the overall form of the Lexus LF-C. The individual roof rail tapered as it moved forward from the rear, mimicking the sculpted theme of the main body. The tremendous tapering of the main body shaped from front to rear, which was then wrapped and interlocked by the rear fenders, was designed to show strength and power from every angle. The interior communicated performance with drive-by-wire steering and Formula One inspired shifter and steering wheel with the gauges stacked along the steering column axis, ascending toward the base of the windshield. The gauges were transparent, with needles moving from the ring, rather than the center.
The dynamic and flowing center console, in a solid tapered form, ran the length of the interior. Displays and controls were hidden beneath this transparent console surface that was multi-layered, which created a sophisticated, high-tech look and feel. The console was flanked on each side by arched, wing-like instrument panels situated low in front of the driver and passenger to create a feeling of openness.
Four lightweight individual bucket seats used slender shapes inspired by modern stemware to produce a contrast of sport and elegance. The effect provided roominess along with a snug and secure feeling.

OUR TAKE: Lexus has always been good at aiming for market share, but when it came to the Lexus IS sedan, it seemed Lexus always took that aim and shot itself in the foot. First, the Lexus IS entered the market with an automatic but no stick, a grave omission for a sedan entry with sporty pretensions. Next it offered a manual transmission but a horrendously intrusive stability-control system that neutered any handling promise the chassis suggested. Now the car has a manual transmission but only in the smaller-displacement Lexus IS 250. The 306-hp Lexus IS 350 comes only with a six-speed automatic.
What is with these guys?
However, the 2007 model Lexus IS 350 does finally come with an “off” button for that overly intrusive stability program, called VDIM, among other things. This is progress. Don’t ask why Lexus doesn’t offer an Lexus IS 350 with an off button and a manual transmission. We must take what we can get and run with it. Or drive with it. Or something.
So we took an Lexus IS 350 and drove it to the track, as well as over some spectacular twisty mountain roads.

The 3.5-liter V6 in the F-Sport Lexus IS 350 breathes a bit easier thanks to a performance air intake and axle-back exhaust. The intake utilizes a high-flow air filter and a TIG-welded machined aluminum pipe. Lexus claims that this C.A.R.B. legal intake can provide up to a 3% increase in rear-wheel horsepower. The 60-millimeter axle-back exhaust is made of polished 304 stainless steel and provides up to a 1.5% bump in power.Suspension upgrades consist of progressive lowering springs, Bilstein shocks and thicker sway bars. Our test car was also equipped with forged 19-inch wheels wrapped in very sticky Michelin rubber. A brake upgrade, consisting of massive two-piece rotors squeezed by six-piston calipers up front, four-piston calipers in the rear, was also added to our test car.So, how does this car drive? To us, it doesn’t seem that different from the standard Lexus IS 350. Power delivery is strong, but the response still feels like it is being choked by the flappy-paddle automatic transmission. If any Lexus could benefit from a six-speed manual, or at least a good dual clutch auto, it would be this one. You can tell that the power is there and wants to get out, it’s just that the transmission won’t let it. There’s also a very annoying, very loud drone at about 2,500 rpm, a spot in which the engine likes to spend a lot of time.Handling is a much better story. Despite being much stiffer than stock, the F-Sport Lexus IS 350’s ride is really quite composed. We dare say that the ride can even be described as “comfortable.” The sticky Michelin Pilots provide an incredible amount of grip, and the feedback they send to the steering wheel lets the driver really feel engaged with the road. Only problem with these tires, as is the case with most sets of performance rubber, is that they cause the car to tramline a lot. Anyone expecting a leisurely “Lexus-like” driving experience -- where you just point the car in the direction you want to go and forget about everything else -- will be sorely disappointed.The most amazing upgrade in this car has to be the brakes. Yeah, they squeak as all performance brakes do, but damn do they stop the car well. The car will go from any speed to zero the instant you stomp on the “stop” pedal. And even after repeated heavy braking, these stoppers won’t show any sign of fade.
Design of The Lexus IS 350
The Lexus IS 350 F-Sport manages to be what the Lexus IS F isn’t -- attractive. The F-Sport’s lowered stance, dished wheels and rolled exhaust tips add just the right amount of menace to the already-handsome standard IS sedan. But outside of the bright blue brake calipers or polished exhaust tips, the F-Sport’s image is pretty understated. Inside the Lexus IS 350 F-Sport, well, nothing has changed. It’s the same interior that is found in any Lexus IS 350. Driving position is good, though the low roof makes things seem a bit cramped for taller drivers. The backseat isn’t all that usable, but since we’re not in the business of carting our friends or colleagues around, the tight backseat really isn’t a concern for us. Our test car also came with Lexus’ excellent touchscreen nav/command system, complete with rearview camera. All in all, the cockpit was what you’d expect from a Lexus, but we’d like to see at least an F-Sport performance seat upgrade offered in the near future.

2010 Lexus IS 350C Overview

Lexus adds to the IS family with the addition of a new two-door, convertible hard-top version called the Lexus IS 350C.
With its two doors and 3-panel retractable hard-top roof in the up position, the new car has a very coupe-like appearance. With the push of a button, the aluminum roof panels retract to provide open-air motoring for up to four passengers. The new Lexus IS 350C shares the same powertrain as the Lexus IS sedan - a 3.5 liter V6 mated to a 6-speed automatic. Comfort and safety features carry-over largely unchanged from the sedan.
The Lexus IS350C is all new for 2010 with added content such as; turn signal incorporated into the side mirrors, front and rear vented brake discs, easy entry rear seats with a power passenger slide, USB connection capability, Bluetooth, seat-mounted airbags that extend to protect the head, and hill-start assist.

There hasn't been any news on a Lexus racecar since we heard rumors that the Lexus IS-F racer, unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon, was really a reskinned 2004 Opel Vectra DTM. While Lexus might not be supporting a factory-backed motorsports program for the Lexus IS, that doesn't mean that privateer teams can't develop a car on their own. DRC Motorsports has done just that and has built two Lexus IS 350 racecars that will compete in the GT class of the SPEED World Challenge. Dubbed the Lexus IS GTF, it will be sporting a 4.7-liter V8 putting out 510 horsepower and attached to six-speed sequential transmission. The first car will make its debut this weekend at Mid Ohio with Jeff Altenburg, last year's SWC Touring Car champion, behind the wheel, and the second car, driven by Robb Holland, is scheduled to make its maiden run the following race at Road America. Both cars are scheduled to run the remainder of the race season.
